Introduction
The article gives an overview of computer networking technology including its history and evolution over time. It identifies various types of computer network architectures such as LAN, WAN, MAN and PAN as well as their respective advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore it explains some of the popular technologies used to connect these networks together such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, DSL, USB etc.
History Of Computer Networks
Computer networking has been around since the 1960s when ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was first developed by the US Department Of Defense to facilitate communication among multiple computers located at various research centers across USA. This project laid down the foundation for modern day internet which is now a global system of interconnected computer networks.
Types Of Networks
LAN (Local Area Network) is a type of network that connects devices within a limited area such as home or office building using cables or wireless technology like Wi-Fi etc. WAN (Wide Area Network) on the other hand is designed to connect computers located in separate geographical locations while MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) covers larger areas than LANs but smaller than WANs such as cities or towns. Lastly PAN (Personal Area Network) is a low range network used for connecting personal devices like smartphones and tablets within short distances usually up to 10 meters.
Connecting Technologies
Ethernet is one of the most widely used technology for connecting computers in Local Area Networks (LAN). In addition to this there are other technologies like Wi-Fi which uses radio waves instead of wires for connecting devices wirelessly; DSL which employs telephone lines for internet connectivity; Bluetooth which enables short range connection between two compatible devices; USB for connecting peripherals with PCs etc.
Conclusion
Computer networking has evolved drastically over time with new technologies being introduced regularly making it easier to connect multiple devices in small or large scale networks from different geographical locations around the world thereby facilitating communication amongst them faster than ever before.
