Policies And Procedures Statement
Regarding Alcohol, Drugs, Safety, And Codes Of Behavioral Conduct
The following are policies that you are required to adhere to in order to ensure your safety and to ensure the success and enjoyment of your La Suerte, Costa Rica and Ometepe, Nicaragua field school experience. It is the responsibility of all the faculty and staff to monitor your safety and behavior at all times while you are a student at the field school. You will be held accountable and responsible for your own behavior and will be forced to leave if you do not adhere to these guidelines. All the following policies apply to all students, faculty, guests, and staff.
La Suerte and Ometepe do not condone alcohol use by students under 21.
Excessive drinking by students will not be tolerated at any time. Organized gatherings are closely monitored by the Senior Faculty (professors) and staff. Repeated excessive drinking will lead to expulsion.
The use of illegal drugs at La Suerte and Ometepe is strictly forbidden and will not be tolerated.
Any student or faculty member that is found using or in possession of illegal drugs will be forced to leave immediately. The penalty for illegal drug use in Costa Rica and Nicaragua is EXTREMELY severe.
Our goal at La Suerte and Ometepe is education and conservation, not getting you out of jail on a drug conviction. One drug bust and everything that we and the students have worked for will be undone. Also, the reality is that if La Suerte and Ometepe fail the forests and the monkeys will soon not exist.
There are designated 'quiet hours', 'study areas', and recreational areas at La Suerte and Ometepe that you are to observe and respect. La Suerte and Ometepe have large areas where students can study, meditate and socialize without disturbing others.
Do not disturb others including members of the local community. We are guests in the local community and as such, we need to respect the values and tranquility of the community.
You are not permitted to leave the field site at any time of day or night without our explicit permission. If you do so, you will be expelled from La Suerte and Ometepe.
We encourage you to learn about the culture of Nicaragua and Costa Rica while you are at La Suerte and Ometepe, but this will be under the supervision of faculty. We will have occasion during local fiestas and holidays when all or most of the class may go into the local community with Senior Faculty as a group in the evening. You are not to separate from the group and you are not permitted, without the consent of the Senior Faculty, to invite people from the local community back to the field site.
Except in the case of emergencies or a planned trip, students will be required to obtain the explicit written permission of the Senior Faculty to go beyond the immediate areas of the field sites. Even in these cases, students have to be accompanied by a faculty or staff member.
Medical Emergencies.
It is the policy of La Suerte and Ometepe that students should NEVER be allowed to go to a medical facility without a faculty member or staff from the field school accompanying them.
